7 Ways to Add Decorative Flair to Your Home

You’ve found the perfect house and you’ve moved in! Now all that’s left to do is decorate it to your liking so it feels like your home. There are many ways to achieve this, but here are seven simple ones you may want to try first. Think of this as inspiration, rather than specific instructions on how to decorate your home, so you can do it in a way that fits your style and preferences!

1) Consider your window dressing

It is essential to decorate your windows during the holiday season, as they are often one of the few things that allow passers-by a glimpse inside your home. Here are some great ways to dress them up

*Holiday wreaths: Hang holiday wreaths on your window for an instant feel of winter cheer.

*Gingerbread houses: Stick mini gingerbread houses on your window using double sided sticky tape or with suction cups to create a festive winter scene. You can also make edible ones from brownies!

*Christmas lights: String strands of Christmas lights all around the top and bottom edges of your window for a glowing effect. Use these at night when you turn off the light in the room to create a special ambiance. Use other colored lights if you want something more fun, festive or just different than white.

There’s no rule that says you have to hang them on the outside of your house, either. Some people hang blue lights in their kitchen and red ones in their bathrooms for a funky vibe. If you don’t like this idea, try green lights for a lush look or orange lights to get into the Halloween spirit.

*Candy cane garland: Make your own candy cane garland out of gummy candies and run it along the edge of your window where it meets the wall.

*Window clings: Apply vinyl stickers onto the glass in various shapes such as snowflakes or christmas trees to add decoration without harming your décor. Window clings work well too because they adhere to glass better than most other decorations. Plus, unlike seasonal wreathes, they last throughout the entire year. Consider adding any of these accents to your window dressing this holiday season!

2) Update your accessories

Don’t forget the other home goods that help add a decorative flair to your space, like lamps, vases, rugs and furniture. All of these items can be used together or separately for a variety of styles and effects in your space. Whether you want a more traditional or contemporary vibe in your space, any one of these accessories will do the trick! For example, if you’re looking for a more vintage look, try adding an old-fashioned lamp to your table.

If modern is what you’re going for, consider getting an LED lamp instead of something with a bulb. And don’t stop there, use different colors to create a sense of balance and cohesiveness throughout your room. The possibilities are endless when it comes to decorating your home, so have fun with it! You can even take inspiration from our Pinterest page! You can also go with the old favorite and use the color wheel. Shades of red, orange, and yellow are perfect for fall decorating. Blues and greens are good for a springtime feel. And shades of pink and purple will add a pop of color during the winter months. Go bright! Pinks, oranges, yellows and purples will always be in style when it comes to home décor! 4) Spice up your entertainment unit

Have you ever seen an entertainment unit that was just a little too basic for your tastes? Well now it’s time for a DIY overhaul. So how does one transform the typical into the unexpected? We’re about to tell you. Check out these seven creative projects and see if any of them catch your eye. The sky is the limit when it comes to decorating with paint, so don’t be afraid to take risks!

-Spray paint an old dresser gold or silver for a touch of glamour

-Tape up some quotes from your favorite books

-Make some colorful string art from old books

-Build a guitar wall hanger out of dowels and twine (tutorial here)

-Frame some photos from trips abroad in different languages -Decorate using found objects like antique keys or beach stones

-Embellish with greenery to make a vignette on top of your coffee table -Try wrapping a round mirror with fabric and leaving it on display as artwork

-Seal those jigsaw puzzles by spraying them with protective sealant spray and then giving them a fresh coat of paint (spraypaint works best!)

-Buy some mini flowerpots and grow flowers indoors. You’ll find they’ll brighten up any room, especially when they’re placed inside an empty wine bottle or jug. And remember, there are no wrong answers when it comes to decorating your home. Happy crafting!

5) Go monochromatic with a splash of color

There are lots of ways you can create your own design style with a mix of solid and bold colors. However, if you’re not ready to take that big leap or simply prefer the classic look, then monochromatic design is for you. It allows for a visually clean space without feeling too stark. Plus, it makes sense when decorating for Halloween! Whether you want a spooky feel or want to stay more traditional, the simplicity of black and white will always be in style.

To make things even easier on yourself this year, use inexpensive paint samples from your local hardware store instead of buying full-size paint cans. If you need some inspiration, here’s how interior designers used black and white in their spaces

1) On the opposite end of the spectrum, a sophisticated color palette such as black and red (pictured below) adds elegance to any space.

2) Accent walls work great with neutral tones because they provide visual contrast against an all-white backdrop.

3) Black as an accent color helps brighten up any room because it contrasts nicely against lighter shades.

4) The beauty of black and white is that it goes well with any hue, so experiment until you find the one that best complements your home.

Making black and white stand out doesn’t have to mean splurging on new furniture. You can easily add interest by swapping out accessories like throw pillows or artwork and using lights with multiple hues. Alternatively, you could try incorporating your favorite brightly colored piece into a mostly dark setting to bring interest into your space without overdoing it. Of course, there’s no wrong way to go about choosing color – all you really need is confidence in what looks best together!

6) Make large items pop

Large items such as furniture, plants, artwork and even rugs can really pop against your walls, floors and ceilings. A great way to do this is with some bold colour. Look for a few select pieces that are not just neutral shades. This will add an amazing accent of color in an otherwise bland space. I personally love adding accents like these because it makes the room feel more welcoming.

Another idea is to create a focal point with vibrant colors by combining different textures, shapes or patterns. You can mix metals, wood and glass objects together for example to achieve something totally unique. One of my favourite combinations is an interesting texture on one side of the wall paired with a bright rug on the floor – it really creates an eye-catching look!

As always, don’t forget about mirrors! Mirrors have so many uses in home decor. They make spaces appear larger, they reflect light into dark areas and they can serve as backdrops for beautifully styled vignettes. The options are endless so take some time to think about how you would like them to be used when you’re shopping around for new ones.

What color would suit your style best? What size? What shape? How much detail should they have? These questions can help guide you while you shop. Don’t worry about being too picky; there’s plenty out there to choose from. Try to plan ahead and keep your budget in mind before buying anything though. With mirrors, the sky is literally the limit! There are so many things that you could do with them and the possibilities seem endless.

So before you buy any, try to plan out what they will be used for in your house. Will they go in a living area where guests might see themselves or perhaps your bedroom where it could act as a headboard? Consider what colours work best for each area and then find mirrors that match those colours. Also, consider their size and whether or not they need detailing like carving or frames.

7) Print it out!

Spruce up your space with one of these seven strategies, from updating the frames on your wall art, to planting some tulips in a pot near the front door. The next time you’re feeling like your place is looking a little too tidy and not quite warm enough, take inspiration from these ideas that are all just one or two steps away.

From sticking it to a photo of your favorite person with some scrapbook paper, to incorporating plants into every room, there’s no shortage of ways you can add some decorative flair to your home. Take a look at some of our favorites below, and be sure to scroll down for the full list!

1. Adorn your entryway with some succulents: While succulents may be low-maintenance, they do require light exposure during winter months to prevent stretching out of shape. To keep them alive through the winter, simply keep them out on a sunny window ledge. If possible, move them back outside when the weather warms up again.

2. Hang curtains across an entire wall: Have a blank expanse of bare walls? Hanging curtains across an entire wall will create the illusion of windows, which is especially helpful if your natural light isn’t very good in the room. And this option looks great with any style of furniture.

3. Update the frame around your artwork: We love how simple this idea is — but don’t forget to have fun while you’re at it! Maybe swap out the picture with one of your favorite pet instead, or mix things up by painting a new design right over top. Whatever you do, it’ll be worth taking care of those dusty old frames.

4. Bring a touch of nature indoors: There’s something calming about having plants scattered throughout your living space — we’re talking real live greenery here!
